I WAS very pleased with the 96 per cent no vote to the Rossington Parish Poll question put to residents on whether they thought it in the best interests to encourage extra housing on Greenfield sites around or within our village.
This was a democratic vote and the people spoke. DMBC election officers who ran the polling, seemed surprised at the turnout, despite no postal votes being allowed. Since the original voting question was tabled at the Parish Council on May 13 and the
legal process subsequently adhered to, the extra housing proposals have been downsized from 15,000 to about 5,000 now centred mainly on the Brownfield ex colliery site.
These changes were made public at a re-launch of the ECOtown, just one day before the Poll took place, obviously too late to change the poll question.
Would the 31 people who voted yes to the building of the extra houses have increased if they had known the number of Rossington dwellings was only going to double, rather than quadruple? Likewise, would the 898 who voted against have changed?
Just because some people may not like the result, the overwhelming majority voted no. The proposers of the ECOtown, bidding for official government approval and acceptance, may also not like the result; but parties should take note, and ignore the public at their peril.
