Doncaster is losing railway heritage

ONCE again, Doncaster has lost a bit more of its railway heritage.
Following the closure and recent demolition of the Crimpsall railway workshops at Hexthorpe, and having worked there throughout the 1980`s, I am dismayed that Doncaster Council did not seize the opportunity to save this piece of historic victorian architecture. Restoring the building and turning it into a railway museum would have been a fine tribute to the hundreds of workers who toiled blood, sweat and tears over the years in the repair and manufacture of steam and diesel locomotives.
This was British engineering at its best, and a chance has been sadly missed to display some of Doncaster`s finest examples of locomotives, with the likes of Stirling No 1, Mallard, Flying Scotsman, Green Arrow, Class 56 and 58 diesel locomotives to name but a few. Oh yes, they were all made at Doncaster.
What a great crowd puller this would have made for the town.
