Published Date: 16 September 2008
DONCASTER Council have recently erected signs on the stretch of road between the Sportsman Hotel and Armthorpe village, showing the numbers of fatalities and serious injuries on this stretch of road.
Then public money was spent on providing a cycle path as a safety measure.

I travel this road quite frequently, and have found that on numerous occasions cyclists are still using the road and not the provided cycle paths.

Can anything be done to make these irresponsible people see sense, they are a danger to themselves and other road users.

If this was a motorists misdemeanour, they would be soon brought to book.

Mr W Smith.

In reply to Mr Smiths comments, in the last issue of the Free Press. When he states cyclist's are not using the cycle paths. I for one do use the designated path's, however has he ever tried using the said paths, when the children from Danum School come out. I would say not, as they prevent anyone else using the path, due to the large numbers, in particular around the bus stop adjacent to the School. This is a no go area, I have seen old people having to walk on the road at that point and I have had to ride on the road to avoid them.

If Mr Smith tried using the cycle paths through Armthorpe he'd realise that they were badly planned and are sited poorly. The left hand path from the Wheatley Hills direction to Armthorpe is so stop / start due to the numerous road junctions and the visability from the path to see cars approaching from the junctions to the main road is so poor that it's safer to ride on the road. Plus people walk on the paths so blocking them and if you ring your bell the comment often as not is "get on the road" plus a few other choice words mixed in!! We cyclists just can't win!!
