X-rated sex show at Little Theatre

EXPLICIT sex scenes. Full frontal male and female nudity. Strong language. Drug taking scenes.
In other words, not your usual quiet night at the local amateur dramatics society.
But that's exactly what awaits theatregoers to the Little Theatre until Saturday night - a two hour feast of flesh, graphic scenes, lots of grunts and groans and some industrial language.
For the venue is staging the experimental, challenging and downright raunchy The Blue Room - a series of interlinked scenes where the emphasis is purely on sizzling sexual relationships.
Originally written in 1900 by Arthur Schnitzler, the play was considered too sexually explicit to be performed at the time and it wasn't until nearly 100 years later in 1998 that The Blue Room came to national acclaim courtesy of a London West End run featuring Hollywood star Nicole Kidman in a series of naked sex scenes.
Taking the lead roles at the Little Theatre are Rebekah Upton and Alan Roberts - and if you don't know them, believe you me, you'll know them both by the end!
The upfront pair cavort around without a stitch on in a series of saucy scenes with little left to the imagination - so its definitely not for the faint-hearted or easily offended.
The duo work on a minimal set - where not surprisingly, a bed is the focal point - through ten short scenes. Each is linked to the next by one of the characters having sex - so in other words, one of the partners follows on into the next scene for sex with another character until the circle is completed in the tenth scene with the final character, an aristocrat returning for a sexual encounter with the girl first encountered in scene one.
It sounds confusing but it will make sense if you see it. And without sounding like Kenneth Williams in a Carry On, see it you will.
A fulsome Rebekah and toned Alan seem totally unfazed that they are skipping around as nature intended in the full glare of the spotlight - the unease seems to rest with the audience who struggle to stifle the giggles as the fleshy bits get an outing time and time again.
One reviewer has described The Blue Room as "pure theatrical Viagra" and it is safe to say some may well check out the show for its sex and little else.
But look beyond the bums and boobs and you'll see two young and accomplished actors taking on a brave challenge. Its takes balls (ahem) to get your kit off and romp around on stage and while the peformances occasionally leave a little to be desired, its certainly a play you won't forget in a hurry.
And you'll never listen to Fleetwood Mac's Albatross in the same way ever again!
* The Blue Room runs at The Little Theatre, King Street tonight and Saturday at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from the box office on (01302) 340422.
