FIREFIGHTERS have claimed that a smoke alarm fitted three months ago saved the lives of a Doncaster couple whose home was left uninhabitable from smoke and heat damage.
The blaze that started in a neighbouring garage spread to the front porch area of the couples end terrace house on Gardens Lane, Conisbrough around 4am this morning.

The couple, thought to be in their 50s managed to escape along with their two dogs through the back door after a smoke alarm, fitted by firefighters just three months ago, woke them.

The fire that started in the neighbouring garage of an unoccupied home spread to a car port next door destroying a Skoda Fabia car that was inside before spreading to the couples end terrace house.

Three crews from Mexborough, Edlington and Rotherham attended the scene and no one was injured in the incident.

Peter Phillips, watch officer at Edlington said: "The smoke alarm undoubtedly saved these people lives and enabled them to vacate the property unharmed."

Firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire.
