WHEN racehorse trainer Ralph Beckett was a boy growing up near Doncaster he could only dream of winning the world's oldest Classic at his local racecourse.
But thanks to his star filly Look Here those heady ambitions could be realised next week.

The daughter of Hernando ran away with the Oaks at Epsom in June but victory in the Ladbrokes St Leger a week on Saturday would be another dream come true for a young man who spent his formative years in the village of Serlby.

He said: "I moved there with my family at the age of ten and remained in the Doncaster area until I grew up and went away to do my own thing.

"Doncaster is a lovely rolling track and they always seem to go a nice even gallop in the Leger.

"That will suit our filly.

"It would be fantastic to emulate the achievements of fillies like User
Friendly and Dunfermline by winning such a great race."

Look Here, who has won two of her three career starts, has been given a relatively easy time by Beckett in the build up to her big target.

The trainer added: "I've always been conscious not to overdo it with her.

"After the Oaks we turned her out and just hacked her out for a while.

"People remind me that another Oaks winner Ramruma was beaten in the Leger but she had been on the go a long time, whereas Look Here should arrive at Doncaster a fresh horse."

Owned and bred by senior Jockey Club figure Julian Richmond-Watson, Look Here emerged as a leading contender for the marathon Classic with her exploits at Epsom – a day Beckett will never forget.

"We thought she would run a big race, but never expected her to win," he reveals.

"Seb Sanders, who rode her, always felt she was better than she showed at Lingfield in the Oaks Trial.

"Things didn't work out for her there – she was pushed wide off the bend – but the one thing we did learn was her ability to handle an undulating track like Epsom.

"I never had any doubts about that.

"She is a well balanced filly who makes good use of herself, but what unfolded at Epsom was beyond my wildest dreams.

"Seb gave her a copybook ride."

However, if Look Here does stand her ground next weekend she will have
to be ridden by a different jockey as Sanders broke a leg in a pile up at Chester at the weekend and is out for the season.

One thing is for certain - there will be no shortage of willing big-name deputies for Beckett to choose from.
