IT'S early days but two things are already clear. From what we've seen so far Sean O'Driscoll's men are capable of holding their own at this level.
But every game looks like turning into a nailbiter.

This was similar to the opening day match at Pride Park where Rovers grabbed the lead in a closely fought clash and hung on grimly to the final whistle.

The difference was that they had chances to finish off Coventry and it would help if they found a sharper cutting edge to make life easier for themselves.

It was still a great triumph against a team not long out of the Premier League and with big aspirations to return to the top flight as soon as possible.

Coventry looked a good footballing outfit but Rovers more than matched them - especially in the first half.

The midfield trio of Richie Wellens, Brian Stock and James Coppinger look just as good at this level as they did in League One and young centre back pairing Matt Mills and Sam Hird have been outstanding so
far.

Rovers have yet to be exposed at the back in open play - the only goals they have conceded so far have come from set pieces and an uncharacteristic mix up - and the team is looking solid defensively from front to back.

There is also a mental toughness and resilience present which will serve them well if they can maintain it throughout the campaign.

Rovers look capable of grinding out results while playing attractive football at the same time and long may it continue.

O'Driscoll was forced to make a change to his starting line up for the first time this season in the Championship when Gareth Roberts was ruled out giving eve of season signing James Chambers the opportunity
to make his full league debut for the club.

Chambers looked a bit hesitant at the start but grew in stature as the
game progressed and had an excellent second half.

There was also an intriguing cameo performance from Darren Byfield when he came on as substitute for the closing minutes to delight the crowd with his fancy footwork.

But the match will be remembered for the 31st minute match clincher - and what a goal it was.

Wellens latched on to a short ball from Lewis Guy who raced forward into space for a return pass that never came as Wellens just lashed the ball into the roof of the net from over 25-yards out.

There were chances for more but it was mainly backs to the wall and the old cliche of 'no easy games' seems more relevant than ever in this division.

Team: Sullivan, O'Connor, Mills, Hird, Chambers, Coppinger, Stock, Wellens (Byfield 89), Hayter, Taylor (Lockwood 83), Guy (Woods 65). Unused subs: Wilson, Heffernan.

Ref: Rob Shoebridge (Derbyshire).

Att: 11,806.
