HAYFIELD pupil Jessica Sigsworth was among the outstanding performers in the Doncaster and District Schools championships held at the Lakeside athletics stadium.
Jessica, who is also a talented footballer, streaked to victory in the Year 8 Girls 200m in a faster time than the top athletes in the two age groups above her.

The winning margin was more than two seconds as she produced a time of 27.94 seconds and she also won the discus in convincing style with a distance that would have placed her second in the Year 10 Girls event.

Hungerhill's Nicole Bewley also won two Year 8 events with excellent performances in the 1,500m and javelin but it was Hall Cross School that triumphed overall.

Hall Cross pipped last year's champions Hungerhill in the overall standings with 230 points to 220 points with Hayfield finishing third on 203 points.

Outright victories in the Year 9 and 10 Boys' and the Year 9 Girls' events helped Hall Cross to the title with Hayfield winning two age groups and Don Valley, Edlington and Hungerhill one each.

Among the other top performers at the championships were Cora Troops who won the Year 9 Girls 800m for Hall Cross by more than 11 seconds, as well as leaping to victory in the long jump, and Hill House St Mary's athlete Beth Haley who was equally impressive in the 1,500m in the same age group.

Hungerhill's Callum Stothard edged out Hall Cross sprinter Ransford Anthony by two hundredths of a second in the race of the day in the Year 10 Boys 100m and McAuley student Rachel Hall came home alone winning by more than 20 seconds in the 1,500m Year 10 Girls event.

Other impressive performances were achieved by Ridgewood's Jake Canning in the Year 7 Boys 200m, team-mate Megan Blackburn in the Year 7 Girls 800m and Balby Carr's Liam Chadwick in the Year 8 Boys 400m.
